Winner of the GHM Addison Award for Interior Architecture & Commendation for Educational Architecture, 2021 Architecture Awards.
Bligh Tanner was the structural engineers engaged to consult with m3architecture in designing the Mary Rice Early Learning Centre (MRELC) – a new enterprise on the St Joseph’s Nudgee College campus.
Adaptive re-use of the pre-existing interior of this generous ground floor space enabled the reactivation of this previously underused building. The design features new activity rooms and communal spaces such as a kitchen and dining hall, garden a reading room, a theatre and an art studio.
A majority of the existing domestic style supporting partitions were replaced with discrete steel column and transfers to allow significant opening up of the “office” style partitioned spaces. This required the use of numerous screw piles and carbon fibre strengthening to allow maximum opening up of the original very restrictive spaces.

"This was a really important project for Lat27 and Bligh Tanner’s collaborative approach to working with us to deliver an outstanding new educational spine for UQ Gatton’s campus was invaluable. The civil and structural team at Bligh Tanner helped us create a new piece of public realm where a sensitive, minimal and seamless outcome was fundamental to the success of the project. The unseen elements of their designs are testament to how smart engineers can provide expertise that complements the presentation and functionality of these projects."
