Bligh Tanner welcomes Nathan Scott
Bligh Tanner welcomed Nathan Scott as Principal Structural Engineer in late 2015. Nathan brings broad knowledge and experience to his new role, along with a thirst to develop strong collaborative relationships with clients and colleagues. “I was attracted to what I perceived as an environment where clients and projects were nurtured, and excellence was valued.”
Nathan has worked in key roles on diverse projects across different sectors, including buildings, bridges, and civil structures. He finds small to medium-scale, architectural building projects particularly rewarding: “My favourites are civic/education type projects where my effort more tangibly improves the lives of people. I also enjoy defence projects — they are unique in their purpose-built nature, and projects are quite process-driven, which I like.” A career highlight for Nathan has been the structural design of Brisbane Square. He analysed and designed stability systems for the 151m tall building — the largest he has worked on to date. With its central, riverside position and prominent visibility, Brisbane Square houses significant tenants such as Brisbane City Council. “It was a large-scale project with many challenges. I’ve realised that the projects that stretch you the most are the ones you’re most proud of when you come out the other end (possibly a bit beaten up!)”
To achieve excellent design outcomes, Nathan engages clients with his personal, collaborative approach. He’s a details man, focused on producing clear, high-quality documents respectful of deadlines: “I value relationships and try to be as personal and communicative as the project will allow…I like to sit with clients working through sketch details, contributing to each other’s outcome. I try to design projects from the details out (in my experience, the devil is always in the detail — sort that early and life becomes easier). It’s also important to understand the big picture and the multidisciplinary nature of a project.”
ON CREATIVITY: “I enjoy the creativity that engineering allows. Every project we work on is a prototype and although after a while we see similar things, we still need to choose the right solution for that particular site and project.”
ON INNOVATION: “The concept of innovation is not as mystical as we sometimes think. As engineers we innovate on a daily basis — we problem solve with creativity. Innovation can often look like engineers doing what engineers do. The big innovations get credit, but I think we’re innovating daily and don’t necessarily realise or celebrate it.”
Outside of work, family life keeps Nathan busy — he has two children aged 5 and 7. He also enjoys mountain bike riding (mostly at Bunya) and sings with a local choir.
